ELLEGARDEN's 5 singles reborn as iPhone apps, Takeshi plays ELLE songs for first time since hiatus

Well, it's been about a year since anyone posted in here, and while we could discuss what the various sub-projects have put out (MEANING's 'Brave New World' came out in November while June saw a new EP from the HIATUS ('Hatching Mayflies') and NCIS's 3rd album 'echo', plus Scars Borough is putting out a new album 'which one?' in August, not that anyone cares), there's actually some ELLE-related news worth writing about!

And the first is... iPhone apps.

While all 5 of the band's original albums plus the My Own Destruction EP are available on iTMS Japan, and Eleven Fire Crackers and the Figureheads EP are available in iTMS US, the singles have never been available... until now.

That's not to say, of course, that you can buy the music. Oh no. You download an app, which apparently comes fully-loaded with the songs, the lyrics (and Japanese translations for English lyrics), the music video for the single, and pictures (which depending on the single appear to be either live photos or stills/promo shots from the music videos).

All available for 450y, which is half as much as the actual CDs, but without being able to, y'know, burn a CD or copy music from one device to another. Sadly, this is progress.

The other catch is that these are only available in the Japanese iTunes Music Store; it's not *impossible* for people outside of Japan to make these but you do need to register an account *and* the only real way to add credit is to buy iTMS Japan point cards (JList has them but you may find cheaper alternatives elsewhere).

Some screenshots:

And links to the official app pages:

Bare Foot
Jitterbug
Missing
Space Sonic
Salamander

As far as the second bit of news, it may not be much, but Takeshi did a handful of free acoustic shows in the Tohoku area to try to cheer up people following the recent disasters. He played some covers, some Hiatus stuff, and also did 風の日 and Make a Wish after getting permission from the other 3 band members.

In typical Takeshi fashion, he played several sets in a day, alerting people on Twitter that 'we'll start at 4, and if we can't get everyone inside I'll do another set at 5, and if people are still waiting I'll do another show at 6."

The members were also seen together in photos taken backstage at SKULLSHIT's 'THE LIVE 2011' event, which featured all 4 sub-bands in addition to a host of other major acts including Maximum the Hormone, 10-FEET, 9mm Parabellum Bullet, Kishidan, and others.

short news summary

takahashi joined another project:
next to scars borough, he is also a member of the predators now. he replaces shinpei, originally of straightener, on drums. the other members are yamanaka sawao (the pillows) on guitar & vocals and jiro (GLAY) on bass. both their original bands are still very much active, so this is just some fun project of friends. it will be a very interesting combination anyway, so check them out!
myspace - OHP - thepredators

--------------
news summary for the other projects, as far as i am in the know.

the hiatus: working on a new album, also will be touring with third eye blind.

NCIS: working on their album as well. it'd better have lots and lots of instrumental tracks so i can listen to it as well - their singer's voice still makes me want to break things.

scars borough: their first full length, feel the stroke, will be out on april 7th. next to that, they are touring until summer.

meaning: i honestly have no idea what they are doing. if somebody knows, please share the news.

I'm probably out of luck, BUT.

A long while ago there was a vid on YouTube of some singer (I forget her name) performing a cover of Missing on a Japanese TV show. I can't find the clip so I assume it's been taken down.

Any chance somebody on here has it ripped? I need the audio for a DJ set...

Thanks!

(p.s. anyone in Tokyo should come to my event! 12/22 at 11pm in Kichijoji. Gonna be nuts. Details if interested.)

Insomnia Single Discussion Anyone?

Insomnia- 1st impression. You can tell that takeshi is def. exploring his songs now and stepping out of his style as you hear a string section. His voice sounds hoarse or strained (too much smoking?) but it compliments the song well as kinda gives a new aspect to listening to him. The lyrics are pretty generic but the melody strikes a chord inside me that gives a feeling of nostalgia. Leaving it on repeat is more than a possibility.4/5

Curse of Mine- 1st impression. Definitely like the new approach. The song has a bit more depth then his usual compositions which is a good thing cause my ears have moved away from standard raw formatted songs. I like the utilization of the piano track. And the song is less predictable and it def. sets a mood using music alone. But it seems more like a set-up song for something. And he could have explored the song more cause I think there's still room for more phrases. 3/5

Antibiotic- 1st impression. God. My favorite thing to do is drive late at night in my IS300 Ltuned and blast music (mainly Smashing Pumpkins <3) that has that night time mood. Sometimes it feels like a movie. This song makes my next set list. This song appeals to ethos. The drum pattern has an offbeat feel but I think the bass could've been utilized more (maybe that's cause I'm a bassist myself). Piano complimented well. But the song seems to lose direction and kinda seems more like a session. For a 6 min track I feel like it still missing something but that's my interpretation. 3.5/5

Hosomi's Blog (15/09/09)

Hosomi said that they have started recording the new EP!!!
He is now working on the arrangement of the last song. He said that until now, he has been writing the melodies and they all work on the arrangement, and he feels it's been a long time since he worked on the arrangement by himself, which he feels is very different from October last year when he had to make decisions by himself, though that made him improved..
He said that even if it's one day earlier, he would like everybody to listen to it soon. He also said "I can't wait even another 2 months."

Does that mean it will be out in 2 months? I can't wait!!!!
Hosomi's Blog (8/9/09)

Hosomi wrote something in his latest blog about Ellegarden that made me quite happy, so I'll just share with ya.

"I have also said this on radio, it's been exactly a year since Ellegarden is on hiatus. Until today, there has not been a single day that I don't wish for Ellegarden to be active again. From now on, it will still be the same. I am not good with words, but in short, I have no plans to give up (Ellegarden). I will continue to strive on."

Yay!!

Official: the HIATUS bigger than Jesus

Apparently Takeshi wrote about this on the blog a few days ago but the details have just been announced.

This is a one-man tour and the band will be playing new songs according to some buzz I've read. They *better* play new songs, because from what I've heard the encores on their current tour have basically been audience requests to play some songs twice and you can't really do a one-man with 11 songs even if you turned the end of Twisted Maple Trees into a 15-minute jam session.

All tickets 2500 yen, as with the last tour you can only apply for one ticket per show, lotto entry starts tomorrow.

Ghost In The Rain Tour 2009

9/2（水）Zepp Tokyo
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : ディスクガレージ 03-5436-9600

9/3（木）Zepp Tokyo
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : ディスクガレージ 03-5436-9600

9/5（土）Zepp Osaka
OPEN 17:00 / START 18:00
INFO : SOGO大阪 06-6344-3326

9/6（日）Zepp Osaka
OPEN 17:00 / START 18:00
INFO : SOGO大阪 06-6344-3326

9/9（水）Zepp Nagoya
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : サンデーフォーク 052-320-9100

9/10（木）Zepp Nagoya
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : サンデーフォーク 052-320-9100

9/16（水）Zepp Sendai
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : GIP 022-222-9999

9/17（木）Zepp Sendai
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : GIP 022-222-9999

9/23（水）Zepp Sapporo
OPEN 17:00 / START 18:00
INFO : マウントアライブ 011-211-5600

9/24（木）Zepp Sapporo
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : マウントアライブ 011-211-5600

9/30（水）Zepp Fukuoka
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00
INFO : BEA 092-712-4221

10/1（木）Zepp Fukuoka
OPEN 18:00 / START 19:00

The HIATUS lyrics

Hey Guys,
here's what I've got so far (I can't do japanese so yeah) :P Will do the rest later!

Ghost in the Rain

Along the master plan
Heading to the barricade
Diversity or skepticism falls into my brain

I rubbed it with the bow
And I listened to the string
Then the whisper of the end
Slipped into the dialogue

I’m a ghost in the rain
The rainbow
You can’t discern
I’m standing there
Ghost in the rain
The same old
You carry on
The world will find you after all

Among the diagrams
Consistency would be found
And a spectrum in desperation
Leads me astray

So stay uncivilized
Independence would remain
When deception is revealed
Witness what’s been jeopardized

Diversity or skepticism falls into
Falls into my brain

I’m a ghost in the rain
The rainbow
You can’t discern
I’m standing there

I’m a ghost in the rain
The rainbow
You can’t discern
I’m standing there
Ghost in the rain
The same old
You carry on
The world will find you after all

Lone train running

I’m on a lone train
Outside is freezing cold
Ripping out the piece of crap
Stuck deep
Deep in my head

And in the morning
There comes another day
Rising like lazarus
I am getting away now
Away now
Away now
Away now

It’s been a long day
I found a ladybird down in the lowland
When skies are icy grey

Life in the moment
I’m not the one who cares
You got me going
We are getting away now
Away now
Away now
Away now

I can’t ignore what’s true to me today
But I can’t be sure
Keep looking for the signs
I won’t forget what you have done for me
I got to keep on trucking

It’s been a long day
I found a ladybird down in the lowland
When skies are icy grey

Life in the moment
I’m not the one who cares
You got me going
We are getting away now
Away now
Away now
Away now

Centipede

This has to be a joke
I don’t accept what’s going on
Let me resign
Detected a bloop
Wanna avoid the exercise

This has to be the moment of a catastrophic age
Everyone is evading the sighs
But who knows the game goes on today

By twice the speed of gravity
Worn out by my depravity
I’m breathing in disunity
And breathing out insanity
I’m trapped inside infinity
And have lost sight of a trinity
I’m looking at fatality
Like a skeleton’s eternity

This has to be the best of me
No words are yet engaged
Everyday I pick up a line
But its gonna be the same as well

This has to be a breed of everlasting kind of things
Turns out to be a thorn in my wits
But who knows the game goes on today

December ‘95
Under waves of grain
Hiding caves of drain
But never going down
I should wipe the stain
Maybe what you are laughing at
Is making you so feeble

By twice the speed of gravity
Worn out by my depravity
I’m breathing in disunity
And breathing out insanity
I’m trapped inside infinity
And have lost sight of a trinity
I’m looking at fatality
Like a skeleton’s eternity

Silver Birch

I was walking around a nearby lake that day
And I was thinking about the things I left behind
Tough subjects left untouched
I was walking down a lifeless concrete street
And I was wondering
How much further I could have reached
How far I could have reached

Then I almost understood

When we were kids
Nothing was left behind the wall
When we were kids
Stars were always shining bright

We’re still around the corner
We’re on the edge of nowhere
We’re aiming to uncover all the stars

I was joking around with a friend of mine
And I was hoping that
A day like this would never end
A day like this would never end
That was only about a week or two ago
Now I am wondering
How much closer we could be
How close we could have been

Night time is so quiet
And it washes away my fear yeah
It won’t come crashing down on my head
My life is not pathetic
But there are things I can’t let go of
And they wont stop hurting
Holding me back

When we were kids
Nothing was left behind the wall
When we were kids
Stars were always shining bright

We’re still around the corner
We’re on the edge of nowhere
We’re aiming to uncover all the stars
We’re still around the corner
We’re on the edge of nowhere
We’re aiming to uncover all the stars

Storm Racers

Waking up to another morning light
Hues are still so intense
Bring it on
Though I am insincere
I am not slowing down

Cause nothing is wrong
Never going back there
Leave it behind
Not a monster I swear
Don’t like the fact that I’m taking cover
Baby we should just do it right
Don’t worry
We’re not going under
If anything goes wrong
Keep it right there
Maybe I feel like I’m taking control
We’ve got to break it down
Hey just a little bit

Warning signs have now been taken down
Inside is rolling fast
Moving on
This’d be the final call
I am not bowing out

Cause nothing is wrong
Never going back there
Leave it behind
Not a monster I swear
Don’t like the fact that I’m taking cover
Baby we should just do it right
Don’t worry<br
Lyrics

Hey guys,
Finally got my copy of Trash We'd Love today! pretty picture on the inside!
I was thinking of typing up the lyrics (given that I'm having a bit of trouble understanding from the song alone), but then I realised that this is the ELLEGARDEN community, not for the HIATUS. What you guys reckon? Should I put them up? :)

PV for The Flare

Well this was unexpected, and on the eve of the Trash We'd Love tour on top of that.

As I've probably mentioned before on this community (or possibly to friends in this community), I do not like most of Ellegarden's music videos because they're generally boring and just show the band from the front playing in an abandoned garage or whatever. In fact, this is why I don't like most Japanese punk videos.

That said, this is how you do a 'performance video'.

<lj-embed id="2" />

Live Report - the HIATUS @ JAPAN CIRCUIT vol. 46

JAPAN CIRCUIT, hosted by rockin' on (publishers of Rockin' On in JAPAN, BRIDGE, etc, as well as show-runners of Rock In Japan Fes. and Countdown Japan), is a series of lives that now basically exist as 'pre-parties' for the aforementioned festivals. They usually feature veteran festival acts as well as up-and-coming acts making their first festival appearances.

Billed by the MC as the band's first show in which they actually had time to practice and prepare a set, last night's event at Shibuya AX was a coming-out party for the HIATUS. So far they've played to gigantic audiences at Punkspring and Devilock Night, but this would be the band's first performance in a livehouse environment (AX's cap is about 1500). How did they do?

Pretty fucking awesomely, I'd say.

Following a set change (HIATUS were second out of three bands), the stage lights dimmed and the band came out to no intro - nothing, nadda, zip - just put on their instruments and started playing.

01.Ghost In The Rain

The lights come up and... who is this dapperly-dressed man and what has he done with Takeshi? He had his trademark punk half-pants and wallet chain, but instead of the usual tee-shirt or whatever he was wearing a black dress shirt with a thin and white (possibly silver) necktie.

And he was all smiles. Incidentally I believe this is the first time I've been able to watch him sing without having to take my glasses off...

02.Lone Train Running

...but that didn't last long. As soon as they got near the end of the slow bit, you could already see the crowd surfers getting ready to jump. Madness.

03.Centipede

More madness.

During the MC Takeshi talked about how he was so excited about this show that he didn't sleep at all the previous night.

04.Silver Birch

I loved this track on the album but it really comes out well live.

05.The Flare

Between the vocals, the strobe lights, and the dress shirt, this was Serious Takeshi time.

Second MC... he announces that he considers this day to be the band's birthday to a wave of cheers.

06.Storm Racers

More moshing and plenty of divers.

07.紺碧の夜に

This was the surprise track of the night for me - you guys have seen my translation, it's one of my favorite songs, I couldn't have been more ecstatic when they started playing it. Yet, surprisingly, despite being one of the most Elle-like songs on the album, not nearly as many divers. Odd.

08.Twisted Maple Trees

Takeshi actually flubbed a couple lines... he started singing the "You shade... your face..." bit in the second 'verse' instead of the third. He realized what he was doing and got back to "twisted maple trees" but he turned to masasucks and gave him this look of "what the fuck did I just do?" He really slammed into the final solo as well.

Fantastic set overall!

Incidentally the other bands on the agenda were Yacht (fun pop-rock from Osaka, they were top batter) and BEAT CRUSADERS (who followed the Hiatus and played an awesome set with a double encore).

...also I kinda ran into Takeshi before the show when we crossed paths at a convenience store. We exchanged 'yo's and that was it, but it was still amusing =P

[Translation] 紺碧の夜に (Konpeki no Yoru Ni - In the Deep Blue Night)

Quick gift - this is easily one of my favorite songs on the album, admittedly because it's a got a vintage Elle-esque sound but there's nothing wrong with that.

Anyway I wanted to translate it so here it is:

Original Lyrics

きっと
にじみだすような
思い出の中に
君がのこした
かけらは咲いて

ずっと
忘れないように
花の景色に
消されないように

Someday we're gonna find ourselves
Holding the candles in our hands

Someday we're gonna find ourselves
Holding the candles in our hands
紺碧の夜を見上げて君に会える
満天の星空も
冬の日の夕闇も
航海に浮かべて
僕らは
月の影にそって
歩き続けるんだ

Someday we're gonna find ourselves
Holding the candles in our hands
紺碧の夜を見上げて君に会える
満天の星空も
冬の日の夕闇も
航海に浮かべて
僕らは
月の影にそって

Surely,
in the memories that run together,
the fragments that you left behind are blooming

I hope I don't forget you
I hope you aren't erased
by the flowery landscape

Someday we're gonna find ourselves
Holding the candles in our hands
As we look up into the deep blue night I can meet you
In the entire night sky,
In the twilight of winter,
Floating on a voyage
We're in the light of the moon

Just one thing
Like a thorn in my side I can't get out

A voice that touched me from far away
Even now it echoes
With a strength that never changes

Someday we're gonna find ourselves
Holding the candles in our hands
As we look up into the deep blue night I can meet you
In the entire night sky,
In the twilight of winter,
Floating on a voyage
We're gonna keep walking in the light of the moon

(chorus repeats one more time)

If someone feels up to writing out the romaji leave it in a comment or email me at dokool[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll edit the post.

the HIATUS - Ghost In The Rain PV

In stark contrast to Dynamord and Growing Up (which always had Ellegarden's PV's taken down on YouTube), Takeshi's new label For Life Music Entertainment has uploaded the HIATUS's first PV for "Ghost In The Rain", the first single off their upcoming album.

<lj-embed id="1" />

I'm... I dunno. The song is fantastic (it's one of the songs they played at Punkspring, actually), the video is certainly different... I'd be a bit more impressed if it didn't look like it was a Pixar test reel. But it's a cute concept.

RIJ 2009: Three Ex-Ellegarden Members Enter... and three leave, but not before playing some music

As foretold in Revelations, the three major post-Ellegarden projects all have their dance cards booked for Rock In Japan Festival 2009.

Scars Borough and Nothing's Carved In Stone will be part of the Friday (7/30) lineup, while the HIATUS have a coveted Sunday (8/2) slot.

Will people come to see SB and/or NCIS? Will the HIATUS get the giant stage? Timetable to be announced in late June or early July, so stay tuned!
